Today is Health Coach Day. 🙂  To be honest I didn’t realize there was such a thing…but apparently…there is!

For the decade I’ve been working in this capacity I’m continually asked what I actually do. The second question I receive is….what qualifications do you have?

Both VERY important questions!

I hope before you ever consider hiring a health coach you learn about their work, their philosophy and most importantly what qualifies them to do the work they do. My professional resume spanning the past 30 years is posted on my website for anyone to review. I’d LOVE to see more coaches provide this transparency for potential clients.

There are many people in the industry who refer to themselves as health coaches. They may have no training or no health-related education or as little as a weekend course under their belt. They may be using the label of health coach but are actually using it as a veil for sales of supplements and food-related products.

This is why I’ve always held firm in never selling products in my practice.

It’s important to me that I never recommend a product because I’ll make money off of it. Even if I think it’s the BEST thing EVER! My clients come to me for support and education. I just can’t in good conscience recommend a product I will profit off of. I’m ALWAYS happy to share product recommendations and do frequently but I won’t profit off of a supplement, essential oil, real food replacement product, beauty product, or any other item. I feel it’s a conflict of interest.

For the record, I believe there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with sales. Sales is a necessary part of daily life. I just don’t believe it has a place in the health coaching industry. I realize others may feel differently about this and that is fine….this is simply my own philosophy and standard.

What Does A Functional Health Coach Actually Do?

First and foremost, I’m a health educator who teaches my clients about the root causes of chronic challenges in the body and the impact daily self-care and nutritional choices have on these challenges.

I teach ALL clients about nutrition that’s based on eating fresh, whole foods and a mediterranean-style diet. If my client has a diagnosed health condition and has been prescribed a therapuetic diet (Keto, Low FODMAP, Paleo, Gastroparesis, Gluten-free, Low Histamine, etc.) then I educate and support them with it in coordination with their doctor.

I provide education and tools for improving quality of sleep and reducing stress. I strategize personalized habits and ways to improve daily self-care. As a yoga teacher, I share ways to use breath and/or meditation to release tension and anxiety. Daily movement is ALWAYS emphasized.

Together we address ways to improve physical health, mental health, emotional health and spiritual health. Because health is whole-istic. One area of health impacts the other.

I provide dedicated support to my clients, and a plethora of resources and accountability. Action steps are identified and followed up on in service to creating healthy habits. Most importantly…I provide hope and an opportunity to transform and create the health and wellness desired.

We are given one body to live in…I believe it’s a privilege to treat and love it well. While we never strive for perfection because that’s WAY too stressful…we can choose to be mindful and treat ourselves with compassion, love, dignity, and respect.
