Happy New Year!
This is the time of year where many of us are making resolutions and setting goals. It is an exciting and awesome time to do so. However, I would like to offer you a slightly different way than you may be familiar with to approach this process. It is called, “Setting Intentions.”
Setting intentions allows us to focus on identifying a heartfelt desire or feeling that we wish to have, then set an intention which is a bit like a personal prayer. We then follow this up with meaningful action that supports our desires and intentions. This is important, because too often we focus only on our goal, use willpower to achieve it, and find that we feel let down or disappointed. The goal that sounded so good to begin with didn’t leave us with feeling how we desired. Why?
Because we never connected to our heart and Soul and considered how we really deep down wanted to feel.
I have found that when I allow my life to be guided by my desired feelings and intentions each and every day…my life flows in a much more conscious and purposeful way. I feel more deeply connected to my authentic self. When I am making choices and taking consciously guided actions regarding the foods I eat, exercise, rest, work, or leisure activities…I ask myself if my actions will lead me to feel how I choose to feel. My intentions are a prayer of support for myself.
If we use an example of wanting to lose 10 pounds, we can adjust our view of the goal and ask ourselves…”How do I want to feel in my body?” The answers might be; lighter, free, energized, strong, vibrant, healthy. Then we set an intention.
Possibilities might include;
My intention is to experience every day as energized, strong, and vibrantly healthy.
My intention is to nourish myself with love and compassion.
My intention is to feel light and free in my body.
As you narrow down and identify the feeling or feelings you desire and then create your intentions you are aligning your life more closely with your heart and Soul. Then…you can choose action steps each and every day that support you. As you take these actions, you are doing so mindfully and in a self-honoring way.
This process is WAY more powerful than making a resolution. Your heart and Soul have become involved. There is depth and meaning behind your goal. This process can be used throughout every day of your life. You can wake up in the morning and ask yourself, “How do I want to feel today?” Then set an intention to guide your actions of the day. You can use the process daily, weekly, monthly, for special projects, at work, or in your relationships.
Identifying desired feelings and setting intentions creates a live that is lived with conscious attunement.
So, think about what you want to achieve today, this week, this month, or this year. Ask yourself HOW you want to feel? Set some intentions and then take actions that support your heartfelt desires. If you find yourself feeling discontented with your life in anyway…go back to the question, “How do I want to feel?”
My personal focus in the New Year is on creativity. I want to feel productive and creative. My intention is to create every day in a focused way that allows for me to be of loving service. My actions are to commit to writing every day (blogs, program content, articles, and my book.)
And now…in the comments below, I would love to hear from you. Share with me how YOU would like to feel this year and what your intentions are. I really want to know!
